so what is this about sicilians, they’re arabs or something ?
Well, most of us are, yes. All indigenous Sicilians are part Arab, and part a million other things, too. I’d say even the Spaniard Sicilians are part Arab as well - as we were under the crown of Aragon — aka the “Arab” or “Moorish” Spain, and the Moors were around in Sicily at that point too.
We’re a mixed people. However it’s more accurate to say Sicilians are Berbers, than Arabs.
Are Berbers that much different than Arabs? I identify as both?
Berbers are completely separate from Arabs and are indigenous to Northern Africa. Berber is just a big term enveloping a group of ethnicities/cultures with similarities to each other. The Arabs colonized northern Africa and “Arabized” them in a sense. You can identify as both since Arab culture has been forced to Northern Africa for hundreds of years. In many places like Morocco it is illegal to have an Amazigh name.
Well, I was aware that Berber = folks mostly from N. Africa. What I meant was, is it wrong for me to claim both identities, like, is being Berber something that I cannot be if I’m Arab, or vice versa, but I guess you answered that.
But good stuff, I did not know that that was illegal.
wow interesting, thanks guys! :D
